Why I Coach the Way I Do

When I decided to become a Personal Trainer, it wasn’t because I wanted to solely focus on changing how people look.

It came from how I felt.

When I first started training, I had no idea what I was doing. I felt overwhelmed in the gym.  Everyone seemed confident and knew a lot more than me.  I second-guessed myself constantly.  I showed up, but I didn’t feel capable.

I remember frequently feeling frustrated at my ‘failures’ - like I should be further along, stronger, better.  I thought progress meant pushing harder, and if I wasn’t seeing any progress then I was doing something wrong.  I needed to be better, be stricter on myself and do more.

But over time, something shifted.

I realised that the moments I grew the most weren’t the ones where I punished myself.  They were the ones where I slowed down enough to understand what I was doing.  Where I learned properly.  Where I paid attention to how my body was feeling and moving instead of fighting against it.

That’s when training stopped feeling like something I had to survive and started becoming something that supported me.

I also have my own coach.  Not because I don’t know what I’m doing - but because I believe it is important to be guided.  I believe in being accountable and having someone in my corner, who ensures I’m pushing myself in a safe and consistent way.  I believe growth doesn’t stop once you qualify.

Having my own PT reminds me what it feels like to be on the other side.  To feel unsure, defeated at times and to need someone to be on your side.  It’s important to trust someone else with your progress and that perspective matters to me.

For a lot of people, fitness becomes something to endure.  It becomes loud, extreme, all-or-nothing.  Be more disciplined, burn it off and push through no matter what’s happening.

This is not how I coach.

I coach for strength - not just in the physical sense but in the steady, grounded kind of strength that carries into real life.

I care about helping someone to feel not only capable, but confident in the gym.  These are some of the things I aim to instil in my clients:

  • Teaching movement so they understand their body

  • Building consistency that doesn’t rely purely on motivation

  • Creating progress that doesn’t require punishment

Do results matter?  Of course they do!  Whether they are big or small, progress is progress.  But results shouldn’t come from restriction, burnout or fear - because these don’t last.

I’m far more interested in helping someone build something sustainable.  Something that carries into the long term.  Something that builds confidence.

I want my clients to leave a session feeling stronger than when they walked in - not just physically, but mentally.  I want them to trust their body a little more and to feel proud of everything they can do.

Especially, in those ‘I’ve done it’ moments - celebrating the wins, whether big or small.

Because  I believe when you train from a place of respect rather than criticism, everything changes.

That’s why I coach the way I do.

  • Not for extremes.

  • Not for quick fixes.

  • But for strength that actually stays with you.

If this sounds like the kind of training you’ve been looking for, you can book a session here.  I’d love to hear from you.
